Left to right: Cmdre Nigel Greenwood, Commander Canadian Fleet Pacific, and Capt(N) Michael Williamson, Base Commander for CFB Esquimalt, unveil the cheque for “$675,000-plus” that was presented to United Way executive Stéphane Haché during the United Way wrap-up breakfast at the Venture Galley on Dec. 11.

As the money continues to pour in, the “thermometres” around base confirm that once again the Defence Team has surpassed the fundraising goal, raising more than $679,000 for the Greater Victoria United Way Campaign.

“I was confident we would surpass the goal,” said Base Commander, Capt(N) Mike Williamson, also the United Way Campaign Chair for Greater Victoria. “The men and women, military and civilian of Maritime Forces Pacific are known for their generosity and support for the community, and it was no different with this year’s campaign.”

Capt(N) Williamson presented an enlarged cheque to Stéphane Haché of United Way Dec. 11 at an informal ceremony at the Venture Galley in Work Point, which marked the end of this year’s campaign.

“At the start, we set a reasonable goal, and I wanted to ensure that it wasn’t simply about asking for more money each year. Instead, it was about each individual realizing they are among the fortunate and it is incumbent on them to donate what they can to help others,” said Capt(N) Williamson.

The campaign focused on educating people about the United Way and its many efforts to help those in need throughout the year.

“We wanted to remind people that giving to the United Way, whether it be through money or by helping the campaign progress, helps more military personnel and civilians than most people realize,” says CPO2 Paul Massé, Campaign Coordinator. “United Way helps a broad spectrum of people including single moms and families going through emotional hardships.”

This was CPO2 Massé’s first year managing the campaign. “Now, looking back over this year’s drive, I wouldn’t change a single thing. We were highly successful and our team was great,” he says.

Capt(N) Williamson attributes CPO2 Massé’s enthusiasm and organizational abilities to the campaign’s success, as well as the hard work of the loaned representatives and the general fun units had fundraising.

“We strived for 100 per cent one-on-one canvassing, and at the grass roots level the story is quite persuasive. So, clear and direct communication has no substitute.”

As the campaign wraps up, Capt(N) Williamson sends his thanks to the defence community.

“Thanks to all those who put so much effort in, congratulations to all those who donated, and well done to everyone involved in the campaign. Now go out and enjoy a much-deserved break.”
