More than 60 CF triathletes from across Canada gathered in Esquimalt for a training camp.
Over 60 triathletes from bases across Canada flew to Victoria Feb. 19 to participate in the first Canadian Forces Introduction Triathlon Training Camp.
The newly formed CF National Triathlon Program hosted the camp, which is trying to revitalize the sport in the military.
A triathlete is anyone who can swim 1,500 metres continuous, then bike 40 kilometres, and end the triathlon with a 10k run.
“Being the first CF triathlon training event we’ve held, the camp generated huge interest and enthusiasm from all over,” says Lt(N) Gordon Roy, Deputy Combat Officer with HMCS Regina. “It gave beginners a chance to get tips and advice from some very experienced competitors, and for everyone to come together and get to know each other.”
The camp took place over five days and served as preparation for the first national CF Triathlon competition scheduled to take place in July. It was especially good for athletes new to the sport, who were able to develop their techniques.
“There are really no outlets in place that offer support or training for those wanting to break in to triathlons at the national level,” says Lt(N) Roy. “This program we’re building is designed to provide that help on a local and national level.”
The program’s committee have started a local CF triathlon club at CFB Esquimalt and they encourage others to do the same on their bases.
“Our club, Tri-forces, has three practices a week and provides a great platform for people to train together and make contacts,” he says. “We’re hoping others do the same, because the more people that get involved the more support there is out there for everyone, plus it means more competitors at nationals.”
The location of the July nationals is still unknown, but Lt(N) Roy says there is a likelihood it will be held in Gatineau, QC.
